"The Scuplture4kids effect" by Mike Fairclough, West Rise Junior School.
"In 2004 Tarek Ali, a Pupil at West Rise Junior School in Eastbourne, won first prize in the prestigious S4K competition in recognition for his sculpture exploring the theme of "Play". The school was awarded the prize money which it put directly into its budget for the Arts. The Times Educational Supplement covered the story in a prominent article, giving the school a national profile and launching it on what has been described by parents as a "meteoric rise to creative excellence and success".
The enhamced opporunities within the Arts created by the S4K competition was also recognised by Ofsted in its report on the School in 2006.
Directly as a result of the S4K success and related publicity, the school has since attracted substantial additional external funding. This has enabled it to build a student lead Art Studio on the School site, employ an Artist in Residence and exhibit in London's Mall Galleries. Tarek's success in 2004 has since inspired hundreds of other children at West Rise, year after year, to follow their passion for the visual arts, raising standards across the board and completely revolutionising and improving the culture of the School. S4K is much more than a competition, it is an opportunity to put a School on the creative map and to cultivate the often untapped creative potential of every pupil within it"
